Lorna Sharon Dettling

October 29, 1959 – March 26, 2012

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister and auntie, Lorna Dettling (nee Strasky) on March 26, 2012 after a long hard fought battle with breast cancer.  Lorna waited until daybreak, her favourite time of day and with her family by her side she left her earthly body behind to join her little brother in Heaven. She is predeceased by her brother Brian Strasky and leaves behind her husband of 32 years, Eugene, sons Corey and Kalen Dettling, father George Strasky, mother Dorothy Cote (Rene), sister Christine Strasky (Mike) and nephews Dylan and Brady Strasky. Lorna was born in Dawson Creek, BC and grew up on the family farm in Farmington.  She loved horses and snowmobiling out on the farm, and loved being a Candy Striper at the Dawson Creek Hospital during her teens.  It was while working as a telephone operator for BC Tel that she met her husband Eugene, who also worked for the phone company.  They were married in 1980 and spent several years moving around the province with the telephone company.  They settled back in Dawson Creek where they lived until 1997 when they once again transferred to Prince George where her mother Dorothy and husband Rene lived.  They spent the next ten years there raising their children.  Lorna opened her own driving school in 2002 and would spend the next five years teaching new drivers the rules of the road.  Lorna loved her job as an instructor as she got to touch many people’s lives by teaching them to drive.  Her students loved her too as evidenced by all the candies and cookies that would come to her door as a sign of appreciation. Nothing in life was more important to Lorna than being with family and raising her “boys”, Corey and Kalen.  She was always there for them and would drop everything to aid them in whatever they needed.  In 2007 the family moved from Prince George to Kamloops to enjoy the fishing and camping that the area had to offer.  Shortly after the Dettlings moved to Kamloops they were followed by sister Christine and nephews Dylan and Brady.  Lorna took great pleasure in her nephews and loved to curl up on her bed with them and enjoy a movie while eating treats from “aunties stash”. It was early in 2008 that Lorna was diagnosed with breast cancer, shortly after that her mom along with husband Rene relocated to Kamloops to be close to Lorna.  Her father George would follow at a later date.  Lorna fought with every ounce of strength she had for four long years until the Lord called her home.  She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her dearly.
