On March 14, 2010 Mr. Hubert Johann Oitzl passed away peacefully in Merritt, B.C. at
the age of 70 years old. He is survived by his brother Hansi (Bridgitta) and his sister Hilda (Gerhard); his 3 daughters, Shanon Archibald of Nova Scotia, Acacia Oitzl (Matt) of Knutsford, Catalina Oitzl of Hat Creek and his son Miha Oitzl of Knutsford. Hubert is predeceased by his father Johan Oitzl and mother Hilda Oitzl
Hubert was born on October 19, 1030 in Ferlach, Austria. When he was 26 he moved to Canada where he taught skiing at Todd Mountain in Kamloops, B.C. and cowboyed for the Whitecroft Ranch. Hubert moved to Banff and ran the Banff Springs Ski School and was a member of the Canadian Ski Alliance. He skied in Banff and Lake Louise during the winter and in Australia in the summer. Hubert enjoyed the cowboy lifestyle and worked on ranches in Australia, the US and Canada. He taught Horsemanship clinics in B.C., Alberta, Germany and Austria and seemed to have a steady stream of horses and riders around wherever he was.
A celebration of Hubert’s life will be held on Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at Calvary Community Church, 1205 Rogers Way, Kamloops, B.C.
What an out of the ordinary, fine man he was! A true gentleman, a charmer and most of all a free spirit. Beside skiing and horsemanship, he also taught us a great deal of living and enjoying the moment; the value of friendship; and the essentials for a fulfilled and happy life. He always had a great story to share about his endless adventures in life, but also was sensible enough to be a good listener and share some quietness when needed.
He will be sadly missed, and for a long time remembered, by all of us who were lucky enough to spend some cherished moments with Hubert and to call him a friend.
My condolences and thoughts are going out to his children and their mom. We all know how proud he was of his kids. They were always a source of that sparkle in his eyes and he loved them more than words can say.
