“Dunc” passed away September 15, 2010 with his loving family by his side. He is survived by his wife Jan, daughters Shelley and Alex (Kevin Barrie), grandson William, sister Betty Fehler (Ernie), and many nieces and nephews in Canada, Scotland, England, and France. Dunc was predeceased by his parents George and Winnifred, brother Bob, niece Lori Church, and nephew Michael Fehler.
Dunc was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta on September 23, 1929 moving to Vancouver with his family in 1949, and finally to Kamloops in 1973 with his wife and two young daughters. He was a born salesman and his varied career took him from one end of Canada to the other ultimately owning Downtown Big O Tires in Kamloops. Golf, fly fishing, reading, and amateur radio were lifelong pastimes that he enjoyed and found hard to give up as his health declined. The highlight of the past year was the birth of his grandson William in December 2009; he never failed to enjoy each visit they had. We will miss Dad’s gregarious nature and unfailing sense of humour.
The family would like to thank Dr. J. Howie and the staff at Ponderosa Lodge for the compassionate care and attention given to Dunc during his stay.
Friends are invited to drop by an open house to celebrate his life on September 23 between 2–4pm at 1-1980 Glenwood Drive. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
Jan I was so sorry to hear of your husbands passing one never knows what to say but my sincere condolences. Brenda Sproule
Auntie Jan, Shelley & Alex,
Our thoughts & prayers are with you at this difficult time. We will all miss Uncle Dunc’s quick wit & endless laughter. He was always there for all of us and the kids will never forget the time they were able to spend with him.
I am sorry none of us can be there to help celebrate Uncle Dunc’s full life but know that you all will be on our minds & in our hearts on Thursday.
Love to you all,
Joan, Norm, Alex, Scott & Grayson
Dear Jan & Girls : So many good memories of Dunc – Standard Stations with Gil Braconnier ( died earlier this year ) to the U.S. BigO convention in Reno & we went on to Palm Springs . We are still active & busy ibn WestVan . Love Grace & ed Lee
Jan, so sorry to hear of Duncans passing. I will remember Duncan for his smile and always wishing others well! He truly seemed to be interested in what others were up to. Hoping your sadness now soon turns to fond memories. Take Care Jan and God Bless Pam
Dear Aunt Jan, Shelley and Sandi, I have lots of wonderful memories of Uncle Dunc from him babysitting me and Lori in the days before he was married, to arriving unexpectedly in Fort St John, having driven in his VW Beetle all the way from Vancouver. At 8 years old, he was the coolest person I knew, and the funniest. Then, finally his and Aunt Jan’s visit to London about 15 years ago – his first trip to Europe! We had a lot of fun – sitting in the front and top of the red double decker bus that was definitely breaking the speed limit, him asking the barman in a pub about his facial piercings and all his spot-on and hilarious comments about people and places. It was so good to see him last year in Kamloops, and introduce him to Paul. I know how much you will miss him. My love to you all, Dorian xx
Dear Jan, Daughters and Grandson. We are sorry to read of Duncan’s passing and hope that you will remember all the fun things in his life. We certainly remember our Vancouver times together on 13th Ave. and of the get togethers with the Investment Club and the “girls night out” at the restaurants. So long ago, but fresh memories. Murray is going to write you a letter Jan, expressing his thoughts about Duncan.
Sincerely and with sympathy,
Wendy Leslie
Hi Aunt Jenny, Shelley and Sandi, so sorry to hear about Uncle Duncan. Being out in Africa visits to Canada are hard to mannage, however, we were able to go on a cruise from Vancouver to Alaska last year but time is always short so we never got to Kamloops. I do a bit of flyfishing in Dullstroom, (Eastern Transvaal) and would have loved to go fishing with Uncle Dunc. Thinking about all of you. Love The Williamson’s RSA (Joyce, Alasdair, Fiona & Crawford).
Dear Aunt Jan, Shelley and Alex (Sandie!), incredibly sad to hear about your loss. Really got to know Uncle Dunc when you visited UK about 15 years a go and discovered his warmth, wonderful Church sense of humour (just like Dad!) and youthful enthusiam for life. So sorry that we didn’t manage to see him this year but his memory will stay with me. Thinking of you all today, Love Nancye
Dear Aunt Jan, Shelley and Alex, thinking of you all today. Remembering Uncle Dunc, his wonderful voice, his straight face when pulling one-liners and his warm and welcoming personality.
All our love
Cindy, Cyril and Chloë
