(nee Duthie)

August 14, 1926February 12, 2010

Dorothy passed away peacefully at the age of eighty-three years.  She is predeceased by her husband Frederick Schofield and sisters Norah Miller and Janet Lampman.  She will be greatly missed by her brother James Duthie (Sheila), children Sharla, Dorie (Don), David, grandchildren Rian, Darcy, David, Amanda, Clayton and Grace and the great grandson that brightened her last days, Coleton.

Dorothy was the third of four children born to James and Mary Duthie.  The family homesteaded in the Salmon River Valley after James served with the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada in the First World War.  In 1945 Dorothy met and married Fred Schofield who would be her husband for forty-seven years until his passing.  Dorothy was an accomplished businesswoman, managing motels, resorts and grocery stores.   She was the founding member of the Business and Professional Women’s Group and lobbied the government to remove restrictions on hiring women.  In addition to these achievements she led a life of humble service.  She was foster mother in the early 1960’s and active in the Kamloops United Church, teaching Sunday School and the Explorers’ Girls Group.  Dorothy was a canvasser for the Red Cross and Heart and Stroke Foundation.  Here dedication to the Eastern Star was a passion that brought her joy throughout her adult lifetime.  Her term as Worthy Matron was a very special experience in her life.  Dorothy was honoured as a driving force behind the expansion and updating of Heritage House in Riverside Park.  She helped run the Seniors Games for years, taking particular interest in lawn bowling where she took time out to win a few medals.  Dorothy had a great love of the outdoors and camping which she shared with and passed on to her family.  She was an accomplished seamstress, regularly volunteering assistance ranging from hemming pants to sewing dresses for wedding parties to sewing bandanas for the Cancer Clinic.  Dorothy’s gift as an organizer, outgoing nature, keen wit, sense of humour and love and care for others will be sadly missed.

Many thanks to Dr. Doug Hamilton and the caregivers at Ponderosa Lodge for their compassionate care of our mother in her final days.

A Celebration of her life will be held in the Schoening Funeral Chapel on Saturday, February 20 at 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers donations in her name may be made to the charity of your choice.
