Barbara Evelyn Stringer

mrs-stringerBARBARA EVELYN STRINGER

1926 – 2010

Evelyn passed away quietly at the Overlander Senior Residence on the evening of April 23, 2010.  She leaves to mourn her passing her husband George, daughters Joyce Hyam (Bob), Shirley Torreggiani, Sheila Bennett and Christine Dinicol (Bill), son Shane Stringer (Jen) and her twin brother Art Fisher from Salmon Arm, BC.  Her older sister Helen Beemish left us a few years ago. Her seven grandchildren including Sandi, Erin, Kristopher, Michael, Stephen, Mark and Lisa.  She also leaves behind four great grandchildren.

Evelyn was born in Armstrong hospital and lived for a few years in Armstrong.  Most of her childhood years were happily spent at Shuswap Falls, a few miles beyond Lumby, BC.  Her father worked at the power plant at Shuswap Falls.  Evelyn attended school in Lumby and later moved to Vernon where she worked at The Bay.  It was there she met her husband who was attending the Officer Training School in 1945 and they were married in 1946.  Evelyn or Barbara as many called her, was a wonderful mother and worked hard at raising her family.  There was a lot of sickness in those years but she was always there for her children.

As the family got older she took up Curling with a passion and was quite proficient at the game.  In 1971, playing 3rd for Kelly Carin, she helped win the Provincial Curling Crown and completed nationally in New Brunswick.  The team was runner-up to the national title.

Evelyn loved her garden and spent hours tending her flowers and watching the many birds that visited her birdhouses, feeders and bird baths.  She enjoyed knitting, quilting and making pictures with needlepoint to give to her family to show her love.  These treasured keepsakes are on display at the homes of her family.  Evelyn was an avid hockey fan, loved to watch the Vancouver Canucks on TV and enjoyed listening to sports talks involving the Canucks.

Apart from her wonderful personality, she was always very organized.  She was a great partner to her husband George for 64 years and a wonderful mother to all of her children.

She will live in all of our hearts and will be sorely missed.

A Celebration of Barbara’s life will be held on Friday, April 30, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Schoening Funeral Chapel with Canon Jack Phelps officiating.

Should friends desire, donations to the S.P.C.A., 1211 – 8th Street, Kamloops, BC  V2B 2Y3 would be appreciated as she was a firm supporter.

  3. Gail Cameron/Don Whyte says:

Our sincere sympathy 0n the loss of your wife, mother and grandmother. We knew her as Ev at the Kamloops Curling Club and have many fond memories of her presence there, her infectious laugh and warm greetings. To my mind Ev was the original multi-tasker, she could watch George curl, knit and carry on a conversation at the same time.
We are sorry we will be unable to attend the Celebration of her life but our thoughts will be with you. Gail and Don

  4. Ed & Dianne Barker says:

George & family – Memories of Ev will always be of a loving supportive wife and mother who had a kind word and a ready smile for everyone at the Curling Club as she knitted away while watching the curling games. We hope your good memories provide you some comfort at this time of loss. The curling club in heaven just welcomed another member. Ed and Dianne

  5. Tom Samuel and Family says:

George, Shane, and Family – Our most sincere sympathy on the loss of Evelyn. She was like a second mother to me, and I will always cherish the memories of her looking after all of us boys on movie nights, and video game nights. Ev was always there for me in many ways, at times when no one else even cared. She was one of my biggest supporters and always looked out for me. May God comfort you all during this sad time. I miss her so very much. She will be in my heart forever. Mom Stringer, don’t worry, I’ll keep looking out for Shane as you told me to do so years ago. Love you all. Tom Samuel
