Samuel Leinweber

Sam Leinweber

Still mourning the loss of his wife Laura who died on October 30, 2009, Sam slipped away peacefully on the morning of Monday, August 23, 2010.  He was 91 years old.  The son of German emigrants from Russia, Sam was born and raised in the Riverside neighborhood of Calgary, Alberta.  He was both musical and athletic, belonging to the Boys Harmonica Orchestra and was an avid player of both hockey and baseball in his youth and was a bowler and curler as an adult.  He joined the CPR in Calgary as a Boilermaker in his early twenties and was soon transferred to Nelson, BC, retiring in 1979.   He remained in Nelson throughout his life until his wife’s ill health forced a move to Merritt in December, 2008 to be closer to family.  He loved Nelson and was a familiar face on Baker Street where he walked daily.  Sam was a born gambler and enjoyed many trips with Laura to various casinos in the US.  He studied mining stocks intensely and took great pleasure in playing the stock market.  His love of music stayed with him throughout his life and he liked nothing better than to entertain others with his mouth organ, especially when accompanied on the piano or guitar by his son, Ken.

Sam was predeceased by his parents Peter and Katherine, his sisters Polly and Matilda, his brothers Albert and Lorne, as well as his beloved wife Laura.  He is survived by his son Ken (Jo-Anne Portman) and his adored granddaughter Kate (Jesse Enright), sisters Joyce and Hilda,  sisters-in- law June and Barbara Leinweber, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bill and Pat McEwan, many nieces and nephews.

He enjoyed many friendships in Nelson and would want to particularly be remembered to Bill and Cora Lunn, Don and Joan Segur, Malcolm and Grace Coupland, Will and Judy Jeffery, and Isabelle and Emerson Moore.

For the past year and a half Sam has made his home at the Florentine in Merritt.  Words simply fail to convey the family’s gratitude for the exemplary care and affection shown to Sam by both the staff and residents.  Sam felt very loved by all.  Further thanks are extended to Dr. Don McLeod for his friendship, compassion and expertise as well as to his clinic staff for the many kindnesses extended to Sam and our family.  Your thoughtfulness and consideration will never be forgotten.

There will be no service by request.  Flowers gratefully declined.

Lorne Benjamin (Ben) Mesluk

BEN MESLUK

Lorne (Ben) Mesluk, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, August 13, 2010 at the age of 56 years. Lorne Benjamin “Ben” Mesluk was born on February 18, 1954 and raised in Grand Forks, British Columbia to parents William George and Helen Mary-Anne (both deceased).  He is survived by his devoted and loving wife Jennifer; son Mathew Benjamin Mesluk (Edmonton); daughter Amanda Jayne Mesluk (Edmonton); sister Lorri Jean Bradley (Kamloops); nephew Scott Allan Trolimenkoff (Kamloops); several aunts and uncles; many close friends and numerous business associates and acquaintances. Ben came to Kamloops in 1969, and was the co-founder of M3Steel (Kamloops) Ltd. and worked building many of the steel structures found throughout Western Canada and beyond.  He was a respected businessman, having assisted many throughout his career with his knowledge and expertise in the steel fabrication world.  He was an avid fisherman, always trying to catch the “big one”; enjoyed golfing with friends; and could always be found watching football, a sport that he truly loved. Most of all he was a devoted and loving partner to his wife Jennifer, they were married in an intimate beach ceremony in Hawaii in 2003.  He had many fiends, both North and South of the border.  Ben’s wife and family were most important to him, and if you were one of the fortunate to become his friend, you could feel that respect and love he shared. Ben left us only in body, for his legacy, so great will never leave our minds and souls.  Ben was a lover of life, and he gave without any expectation.  Those that wish to, please direct your donations in Ben’s name and memory to the “Royal inland Hospital – Paediatrics Ward” Kamloops, a charity he was fond of. You are cordially invited to a “Celebration of Life” in honour of Ben, on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Aberdeen Hills Golf Links Clubhouse, 1185 Links Way, Kamloops.

Hunter Sharkey (Susan) Shaw of  Kamloops, as well as two granddaughters Tina (Jack) Schmitt from Scott City, Kansas; Joy Shaw and great-grandson Cole from Edmonton, Alberta.  She is also survived by her sisters Phylis Sinclair of Ketchikan, Alaska; Jean Wilcox of Kamloops; Betty Stewart of Vancouver and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her husband Hunter Shaw and her brothers Joe and Jimmy Povoas.

Mom was born in Olds, Alberta on November 19, 1913 but spent her life in Kamloops.  She married Hunter in 1941 and together they spent a great deal of time at the Shaw Springs Resort near Spences Bridge where Mom helped uncle Bill Shaw in the kitchen baking awesome pies and cakes for travelers.

It wasn’t only her baking that people admired.  Mom’s hands were always busy kitting or doing cross stitch.  Her handwork is highly cherished by all her family.  One of Mom’s favourite pastimes was bingo and she was known to play a dozen cards at once. She was also very proud of her Scottish heritage.

Mom loved her family and supported us in whatever activities we were interested in.  It didn’t matter what the occasion, whether it was music recitals, school events or rodeos, Mom was there to cheer whether we won or lost.  She taught us to be kind to others and showed us that strength comes from within.  We’ll miss you dearly.

Should friends desire, donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated in her memory.
