It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Magda Pavdy on March 26, 2010.
She is predeceased by her husband Frank, brother Julius and son Istvan. She leaves behind, to mourn her passing, her daughter Marika and son-in-law Bruce (Tasaka) along with many relatives in Hungary and friends all over the world.
Magda was born on November 7, 1921 in Hungary. She and her small family escaped from Hungary in early 1957 and set up home in England until 1971, when she and her husband Frank immigrated to Victoria, B.C. Canada. They remained in Victoria until 1993 and then moved to Tsawwassen to be close to their only daughter. After Frank passed away in 1995 Magda moved to Ladner. In 2009 Magda moved to Kamloops and lived at Berwick on the Park.
Magda was active in the Hungarian Society of Victoria, where she sang in the choir and was often seen making langos on Canada Day in Centennial Square. When she moved to Tsawwassen she joined a choir there and played Canasta whenever she had the chance.
Magda was a fantastic cook and she loved to feed people. She was a wonderful wife and mother. She was generous to a fault, thoughtful, kind and fun to be around.
We would like to thank Dr. Peter Gorman and all the staff at Berwick on the Park for helping to make Magda comfortable and happy in the last few months of her life.
A memorial service and Liturgy of the Word will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, March 31st, 2010 in the Schoening Funeral Chapel. Interment will take place in Victoria, on a yet to be determined date.

HAIMILA, BRUCE WAYNE
September 16, 1949 – March 10, 2010-03-13
On March 10th, Wayne Haimila passed away peacefully in his sleep after a short battle with cancer. He will be deeply missed by friends and family. Although it was far too short, he lived a rich life. He was a man who loved life and shared this joy with so many. He once said, “Wine was meant to be drunk, life is meant to be lived and friends are meant to be loved.” All who met him quickly considered him a friend. He was an honourable man.
To Wayne, life was an adventure. He had an infectious joie de vie. His stories made you wake up laughing the next morning. He was an avid reader with a broad knowledge of many subjects. He had a vast and eclectic music collection. He was a published author. He travelled extensively. His Mexican trips with good friend Bruce Campbell are still subject to debate. He twice ran in a relay from Skagoway to Whitehorse.
Wayne was born and raised in Edmonton. He went to UVIC for his undergraduate studies. He obtained his law degree from UBC in 1979. He briefly practiced law before becoming an advisor to the Assembly of First Nations and later to the First Nations Tax Commission. He was instrumental in some of the most important modern advances for First Nation people including the constitutional express, advances in land claims processes and recent legislation. His experiences during these processes are legendary. Those fortunate enough to listen to these tales gained more than a few pearls of lasting wisdom.
His proudest accomplishment, however, was the birth of his son Terrance, with Brenda McGregor in 1996. He was also so proud of Brenda’s daughter Savanna who he loved like his own daughter. He never grew tired of talking about them. It is truly sad that they lost a role model like Wayne so early in their lives.
Wayne will be dearly missed and remembered by his family for his kindness and generosity. He is predeceased by his grandfather Peter Gloubish and father Arnie F. Haimila. He is survived by his grandmother Christina Gloubish, beloved mother Olive Haimila both of Edmonton, Alberta, sister Mary-Jane Fortin, brother in law Maurice, his nephews Daniel, Yves and partner Alaina Parker, Great nephew Domonique all of Calgary, Alberta, aunt Florence Durocher of Edmonton, Alberta, uncle Terry McGuire and numerous cousins.
A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Wayne Haimila will be held in the Schoening Funeral Chapel, 513 Seymour Street, Kamloops, B.C., on Friday, March 19th, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. with reception to follow. Interment will take place in Edmonton, AB.
Friends wishing to pay their respects may call at the Schoening Funeral Chapel between
7:00 and 9:00pm Thursday evening, March 18th.
On March 9, 2010, Mrs. Jacqueline Joan Haupt (nee Smedley) passed away peacefully at the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice Home in Kamloops, BC at the age of 68 years.
Jacque is survived by her loving husband Larry, daughters Jodi (Murray) Beamish of Trail, BC and Heidi (Lawrence) Cheung of Edmonton, AB and son Dennis (Tracy) of Kamloops. She will be remembered by her grandchildren Matthew Beamish, Avery and Oliver Cheung; also by her sister Gwen Booy, her brothers Bruce (Veronica) Smedley and George (Karen) Smedley and her cousin Brian Dopson.
Jacqueline is predeceased by her father and mother Jack and Joan Smedley and her grandson Nathan Beamish.
Jacque was born in Williams Lake, BC. Her family later moved to Trail, BC where she graduated from JL Crowe High School. She moved to Kamloops in 1968 with daughter Jodi and began work at Agriculture Canada, where she met Larry. In 1972 they eloped to the Hitchin’ Post in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Her bouquet was a sheaf of wheat gathered in a nearby field. After Heidi and Dennis were born she went back to work, this time with the Ministry of Social Services. Jacque worked with the Ministry until 1993 when she was first diagnosed with cancer. After years of remission she was again struck with cancer and taken from us.
Jacque loved to quilt and visit with her many friends from quilting. She was an avid reader and enjoyed sketching and learning to paint water colours. Her creations have enriched us all in many ways. The greatest thing we will miss is being greeted by her beautiful smile.
There will be no funeral service by request.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice Home, 72 Whiteshield Crescent S., Kamloops, BC V2E 2S9 or the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation, Cancer Services Fund, 311 Columbia Street, Kamloops, BC
V2C 2T1.
